The illuminations for medieval Spanish manuscripts of Beatus of Liébana’s 8th-century Commentary on the Apocalypse are incomparable.  No one used colors like those Visigoths. 
This Beast of the Apocalypse is from a 10th-century Beatus manuscript held in El Escorial (Escorial, Biblioteca Monasterio, Cod. & II. 5, f.108v).
